US-Mexico Tensions Rise Amid Allegations Over CIA Role in Cross-Border Security Operations

The murders of two Americans in Mexico have led to a diplomatic tussle regarding whether the victims were ordinary embassy instructors or agents from a classified CIA mission. Although Mexican state officials had originally said that the victims were embassy employees who gave "basic training" after an attack on a drug laboratory, several articles in the Washington Post and other newspapers have since reported that the men were, in reality, CIA agents. It has therefore caused President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico to probe if the operation contravened national security regulations, which explicitly prohibit joint military activities within Mexican territory without presidential consent. The event is not new, but rather one of many clandestine CIA-Mexican partnerships, where CIA operatives train and gather information for select Mexican forces who apprehend high-ranking cartel members, such as Ovidio Guzmán-López.
